Designing print materials based on Z-layout and F-layout eye-scanning patterns.

Z-layout and F-layout patterns describe how users view a page or screen—whether looking at brochures, flyers, banners, or billboards. The eyes naturally move from left to right and top to bottom, though the specific path varies depending on the volume of content and the design.

Z-Layout (Z-Pattern) Reading Behavior

  • Visual flow: The eye starts at the top-left (logo or headline), moves across to the top-right, travels diagonally down to the bottom-left, and finishes at the bottom-right.
  • Best for: Designs with minimal text that emphasize graphics or a strong "first look," aiming to capture the viewer's attention and highlight key points immediately.
  • Key principle: Creates a linear experience that guides the reader quickly toward a specific goal or Call to Action (CTA).

F-Layout (F-Pattern) Reading Behavior

  • Viewing pattern: The eyes scan horizontally from left to right across the top line, then move down to perform a shorter horizontal scan, before finally scanning vertically down the left side of the content.
  • Suitable for: Text-heavy layouts featuring multiple topics or extensive details within each section.
  • Key insight: Readers scan for keywords rather than reading every word; therefore, using subheadings and bulleted lists helps users grasp the main points more effectively.
